Broadband Deployment Must Distinguish Between Legal and Illegal Internet Traffic, Copyright Alliance Tells FCC
September 17, 2009
WASHINGTON—Copyright Alliance Executive Director Patrick Ross today in a presentation at the Federal Communications Commission told regulators that deployment of a national broadband policy must not hamper creators’ ability to protect their copyrights online.
“Government promotion of broadband deployment must encourage meaningful distinctions between lawful and unlawful traffic. To not do so would allow illegal activity to supplant new and innovative legal efforts.”
Ross was among several representatives appearing on a panel, “The Role of Content in the Broadband Ecosystem”, one in a series of workshops the FCC is holding regarding broadband technology and the development of a National Broadband Plan by February, 2010.
Ross emphasized the diversity of the creative industries, and highlighted the experiences of several individual artists. The Copyright Alliance represents a diverse group of copyright-dependent companies, trade associations, and artists unions.
“Our livelihoods depend on intellectual property rights, and without the ability to enforce those rights, those rights are meaningless,” Ross noted.
